Root Canal Treatment

A root canal, also known as an endodontic treatment is the process of removing infected or injured tissue from inside the crown and roots of the tooth. This damage can be the result of decay, trauma or gum disease. Getting a root canal is very easy and effective. You will be back to eating and chewing in no time.

Root Canal Treatment Procedures

  1. Tooth evaluation: This is the first step in which we will evaluate your tooth with the help of a dental x-ray. This x-ray will allow us to look inside the crown of your tooth and at its roots for any abnormalities.
  2.  Local anesthetic: After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, a cover called a dental dam is placed over your tooth to protect the airway and prevent saliva contamination during treatment. With the help of specific tools designed for root canal treatment, the damaged area of the tooth is cleaned and the nerve is opened.  This is an entirely painless procedure.
  3. Root cleansing:  After the infected nerve is open, it is removed, the nerve canals in your roots are then cleansed and shaped so that the ideal filling material for the root can be placed.
  4. Temporary filling:  Following the cleansing process, the tooth’s cavity is filled with a temporary filling until the root canal process is completed. Often root canal treatments can be completed in one visit but on occasional two visits may be necessary.
  5. Root filling: This is the final step of the root canal treatment.  We will fill the root canals with a special root filling material, to further protect the tooth from fractureing. It is always highly recommended to have a crown placed on your tooth following a root canal treatment as over time, teeth become brittle and are suseptible to fracture when the blood supply is removed.
